Ditch the Microsoft Teams taskbar icon to speed up Windows 11

There’s plenty to take in if you’ve moved to Windows 11 from Windows 10, with many major changes visible in the taskbar. Yes, there’s the repositioned Start button and centered shortcuts, but there are plenty of other changes as well. Just look to the right side of the taskbar and you’ll notice all sorts of changes from previous versions of Windows.

As Microsoft tried to encourage people not to use the likes of Soft and Zoomthe company pushed its own Microsoft Teams application. A seemingly innocuous addition to the taskbar was a shortcut to Teams, and while you might not want to give the icon space if you’re not an app user, there’s more. more reasons to hide the icon than to simply save space on your taskbar.

You might be surprised to learn that as long as the Microsoft Teams icon is housed in the Windows 11 taskbar, it launches background processes. These Microsoft Edge WebView2 processes are associated with the browser’s rendering engine and use system resources that could be put to better use.

Drain Resources

Same goes for the Widgets icon which is in the taskbar but, as a developer Michael Niehaus points out, there is a key difference between the two icons. While Widgets only launches processes when the icon is clicked, the mere presence of the Teams icon is enough to use several megabytes of RAM.

If you don’t use Teams, you might consider simply uninstalling the app. But to avoid the problem of having to reinstall it if you need it later, there is an alternative – just hide the icon. This simple gesture is enough to prevent Teams from gobbling up resources in the background.

If you try to right-click on the Teams icon to remove it, you’ll notice that no context menu appears. To remove the icon, you’ll instead need to head into the Windows 11 Settings app and navigate to Personalization > Taskbar, before moving the “Chats” toggle to the “Off” position.
